“Consumer unit” is a technical term for the box in a home that has the circuit breakers, fuses, and mains power coming in.
Electrical safety is always getting better, so many consumer units in the UK are now out of date. However, many homeowners don’t even know this.
Replacing the consumer unit is not a job for a beginner, but it doesn’t have to be too expensive either.

Consumer Unit Replacement
All British electrical installations had to be equipped with residual current devices (RCDs) beginning in 2001. The primary goal is to keep the unit safe when it is plugged into an outside source of electricity. To prevent damage, the RCD device trips and shuts down the power supply when a fault occurs.
It doesn’t matter if you have no outdoor sockets because the law requires RCD protection for all cables that are buried in the wall of your property, except for alarm circuits.
The 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations require that your consumer unit be installed by a licensed electrician.
